Frédéric Chopin's 4 Scherzi are high points in the Romantic piano repertoire. Chopin here takes a traditional genre and fills it with radically new content. They are wild, demonic in tone, and there is little about them that is joke-like, despite the original meaning of their title. Referring to the 1st Scherzo, Robert Schumann asked: “how should seriousness be attired, when even a 'joke' is veiled in black?” Now that the Scherzi nos. 1-4 have been published in revised stand-alone editions, G. Henle Publishers is now offering all four in paperback and hardback, in an edition that reflects the current state of Chopin research. Both the footnotes and the extensive Critical Report on the Internet offer detailed information on the familiar topic of “Chopin variants” and on all the textual problems they raise. This is Chopin in top form!

In his polonaises Chopin takes on the tradition of a genre recently endowed with the function of national dance. Three childhood polonaises constitute a replica of the model of the functional dance, while each of the later worksof this genre has its own character: lyric, dramatic or heroic. Tied into the interpretations were subjects such as the struggle for freedom, the knightly andinsurgent traditions and sometimes they came to have a symbolic functionin Polish history. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski based on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form. Theminiature version of the National Edition does not contain source commentary or performance notes.

The title has been taken from a review of Robert Schumann of the then newly published Preludes Op. 28. According to this reference, Stefan Heucke's Preludes are tributes to the three great piano composers of the 19th century: Chopin, Liszt and Schumann. By tradition, each of Heucke's 12 Preludes starts from a different keynote while attempting, however, to use major and minor modes at the same time in constantly new combinations.

Sergei Bortkiewicz (1877-1952) continued the late-Romantic piano tradition with great melodic talent. After studying in St. Petersburg with Anatoly Lyadov and in Leipzig with the Liszt pupil Alfred Reisenauer, the native Ukrainian settled in Berlin. Political times blocked his career several times. Only in 1945 he was able to regain his footing in Vienna. The Fantasy Pieces for Piano op. 61 were to be printed in 1949 by the music publishers Benjamin, but again the political circumstances were not favorable for Bortkiewicz. In 2013, the manuscript was discovered in the Saxon State Archive Leipzig. This first edition finally makes Bortkiewicz's highly pianistic pieces accessible. The fantasy pieces do not deny the role models Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky and bribe with Slavic tinted melancholy, paired with Viennese charm.
